They should not be painful or distressing in any way. Certain positions that you assume in asana, such as padmasana, etc., may be painful. You should not struggle to maintain it if you cannot sit in that pose for a long time. Whatever is convenient, that is the proper . As the Patanjali sutra tells us : As is convenient to you, so is the posture that you have.
