1.6 ARJUNA’S ARGUMENTS

(Slogas - 38-47, 10 No.)

===========================================================================

ARJUNA COMES UP WITH convincing arguments why killing his kinsmen would

cause great moral disturbances among the people that survive the war. Arjuna feels, “I am

quite prepared to let the enemy have the victory for they do not know it is sinful. But we

(i.e. Krishna and himself), who know the harm that is to befall the people – why should we

stoop so low and participate in this destructive activity?” This is Arjuna’s line of thinking.

Arjuna presents his case to the Lord, whom he considers as his dear friend. The

following is from Arjuna, the friend of Krishna, not from Arjuna, the disciple of Krishna. This

has to be noted carefully; otherwise we will be more confused than Arjuna!

The following arguments by Arjuna are answered by the Lord in the next Discourse.

Slogam - 38: i) “Why Should We Do What They Do?”

"Yadi api ete na pashyanti lobha-upahata-chetasah;

kula-kshaya-kritam dosham mitra-drohe cha paatakam;"  || 1-38||

================================================================================

1 Yadi api ete na pashyanti  = Though they do not see,

2 lobha-upahata-chetasah;  =  due to their intelligence being clouded by greed,

3 kula-kshaya-kritam dosham   =  the evil in the destruction of families,

4 mitra-drohe cha paatakam;   =  nor any sin in cruelty to friends . . .

============================================================================

Slogam - 39: ii) “From the Destruction of Family Unit

"Katham na jneyam asmaabhih . .  paapaat asmaan nivartitum;

kula-kshaya-kritam dosham prapashyadbhih janaardana." || 1-39||

===============================================================================

1 Katham na jneyam asmaabhih . . .   =  why should not we learn

2 paapaat asmaan nivartitum;   =  to turn away from this sin –

3 kula-kshaya-kritam dosham   =  the evil in the destruction of families –

4 prapashyadbhih janaardana.   =  for we clearly see it, O Janardana?
