Arjuna is just coming on board the “SS Karma  Yoga” oceanliner, and is about to set sail. The last two verses of this section describe two  well-defined ports at which he will dock along his journey – the first is an interim stop, the  second is the Destination.   Another purpose served by these slogas is to place Karma Yoga in its true  perspective as a sine qua non for

Swami Krishnananda (Spoken at a conference in Delhi on December 27, 1973.) ================================================================================== The human predicament is portrayed in all its colours and patterns at the very outset, in the very commencement of this gospel, the Bhagavadgita, which is meant to be an instruction to man in all his walks of life. The problem of man is the conflict of life. Every moment of time we are in a state of conflict. We are in a dilemma. We are sometimes between the devil and the deep sea, as they say. We are caught by two horns of a dilemma, between which we cannot easily make a choice. Sometimes we do not know whether it is better to live or to die. People who have suffered life know what it actually means. “Is it good to live in this world, or is it better

===================================================================================== Tuesday 14, May 2024 06:57. Chapter 6: Sankhya – The Wisdom of Cosmic Existence - 8. Post-29. =================================================================================== This is a little commentary on the principle of action in this world. Act you must; work is your duty. It is so because of the fact you are involved phenomenally in this body, in space, time and causation. You cannot wrench yourself from the relativity in which you are involved just because of the fact that Universality is your existence. So the Bhagavadgita brings about a beautiful blend between the relative and the Absolute. It does not go to the extreme of emphasising only the earthly existence of political and social relations, nor does it sever the relationship of your relative existence with the cosmic existence. God and man walk together in the principle of the Bhagavadgita. They shake hands, as it were, as friends. Kri

================================================================================ Saturday 11, May 2024 06:57. Chapter 6: Sankhya – The Wisdom of Cosmic Existence - 7. Post-28. ================================================================================ Yajnavalkya says, "What you say is correct because the offering is a limited, finite substance. It may be some charu, some ghee, or some preparation like porridge; it is a perishable unit indeed. The altar is also a limited substance. Where is the unlimitedness there? How would heavenly enjoyment or immortality accrue to the performer if perishable objects are offered at a perishable altar? The perishable nature vanishes and the impershability implied in the performance of the yajna manifests itself, provided the yajnamana at the same time contemplates the divinity that is between the adhyatma and the adhibhuta. If the yajna or action, or whatever it is, is performed minus the consciousness of the adhidaiva, then it becomes a pe

Swami Krishnananda (Spoken at a conference in Delhi on December 27, 1973.) ================================================================================= This metropolis of Bharatavarsha, today called Delhi, the headquarters of our country, was originally known as Indraprastha, the capital of King Yudhisthira of Mahabharata fame. This is the spot and the atmosphere wherein was enacted the drama of human life many centuries ago, an enactment which has been recorded for us by Sage Krishna Dvapayana Vyasa in the masterly epic known as the Mahabharata. Not very far from this place is Kurukshetra, the arena wherein were arrayed conflicting forces as the Pandavas and the Kauravas. Therefore, it would be worthwhile for us to contemplate for a few seconds in our own hearts a majesty which once reigned supreme in th
